Ali Burnard
PG Dip Gestalt Psychotherapy
Accreditation: | IAHIP |
Code of Ethics: | IAHIP |
Telephone No: | 087 6452227 |
Address | East Clare |
Description of Work and Background:
From an early age, I've had a strong and enduring passion for meditation/personal development, nature and spirituality. I was born in England and came to Ireland in the early 90's, drawn to the wildness of the land here. This started a transformative ball rolling in terms of living in nature and working with various therapists and showed me first-hand the power of entering into therapeutic relationship.I trained & worked as a group facilitator for Concerned Persons in an Addiction Treatment Centre. It was here I realised the deep fulfilment I felt from working with others in the service of accessing different ways of responding to life rather than the repetitive painful loops we can sometimes find ourselves in. I attended an Ecotherapy course (on how to access the healing power of wild places) and also around this time I started working with a Gestalt therapist and realised I wanted to work with people in nature. I graduated from the I.G.C. in 2016. During this time I began teaching Meditation and Mindfulness; my Gestalt training supports me in exploring effective ways to offer what I have learned from a lifetime's Practice. Most importantly, Gestalt teaches me the blessing of a non-judgemental attitude, appreciating ALL aspects of myself and by extension to others and what they bring to the session. As I practice being with 'what is', my clients can absorb new ways to be with themselves; ones which raise self-awareness, understanding and engender self-compassion. Making choices and acting from these places creates a fuller, more vital way of living. I am available to teach meditation, bring people to Nature and see clients one-to-one. Description of Work and Background:
Michael is an accredited psychotherapist, who has a depth of experience and knowledge in working alongside people who present with a wide variety of personal and relational issues. The cornerstone of Michael's practice is built around creating a safe space for individuals who wish to explore such issues as anxiety, stress, anger management, bullying, sexual identity, sexual abuse, lose of relationship, bereavement, self-harm, body image, eating disorders, and trauma.Michael also works with sports teams and high-performance athletes. His work is unique, in that he supports and teaches teams of athletes, as well as individual athletes in one to one sessions, how to identify and undo the embodied holding of stress and anxiety in their bodies. The unconscious holding of stress and anxiety by athletes is the single greatest contributing factor that leads them to choke, an experience which is the single greatest barrier towards optimal individual and team performance.

Description of Work and Background:
Martina has an expansive training background which she draws from in working creatively with individuals. Martina is an experienced facilitator, having worked in the community development sector in Ireland for over 15 years. She took her Masters in 2011; exploring the role of Spirituality in the identity formation of young Irish women.Martina works from an holistic approach, using an indirect, person centred method, following the client’s lead. The Gestalt approach to counselling is grounded in the here-and-now. This means that what you are experiencing in the present moment, in the therapy room or with your partner, takes precedence over your past experiences. This means that the therapy process is alive and present-centred.
The foundations of Gestalt therapy are based on awareness. Working with clients is based on supporting them in raising their awareness about how they are living their lives. In being more aware, Gestalt therapy can then help you make more positive choices that will have meaning, are creative and will aid you in creating a life with relationships that are fulfilling.
“Change occurs when one becomes what he is, not when he tries to become what he is not” Arnold Beisser
Martina also facilitates creative development programs such as the widely acclaimed ‘Artist’s Way’, and her own programmes; ‘Writing your Sacred Journey’ and ‘The Way of The Inner Teacher’.

Description of Work and Background:
‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous” Actually, who are you not to be’?I have a profound interest and belief that you the client are doing your very best at all times (with your knowledge, awareness and experience). If you are willing I can endeavour to support you toward your light (your true self). Firstly to come into your light you have to really get to a felt sense of your darkness in the presence of a compassionate other. I am passionate about the healing that happens whilst staying in the ‘here and now’ moment in therapy. The key to any recovery or healing is the relationship that is built up between client and therapist. My own awareness of my inner critic and compassion toward myself models clients to practice this self- compassion and awareness for themselves. If you feel I could be of support to you on your journey of self discovery I look forward to hearing from you.

Description of Work and Background:
I became interested in counselling after being on a Personal Development Course with the Irish Gestalt Centre. I was and still am fascinated by the way people respond to Gestalt counselling. From my own experience I know how it feels to discover something new about myself and my patterns of behaviour. I feel I bring this excitement and enthusiasm into my work with clients, along with experience, warmth and humour.Since starting work as a therapist I have worked with a diverse range of difficulties such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, work related issues, addiction, sexuality, sexual abuse and bereavement. I operate on the basis that we all have the ability to solve our problems. Sometimes we get stuck and need help. I see my role as counsellor as helping the person to see clearly what their situation is and find out how they are part of it. Then we experiment together with finding new ways of facing the difficulty.
I offer one-to-one counselling, couple counselling, meditation and personal development groups. For more information about how I work please visit www.sligogestaltcounselling.ie

Description of Work and Background:
Following my 5 year psychotherapy training with the Irish Gestalt Centre and graduation in 2008, I took a placement with the Student Counselling Centre in U.L. Student counselling is a primary care service with clients self referring in the main with the full range of clinical disorders. I followed this with an internship in ‘Oakwood’ (a private mental health service) run by Dr. Declan Aherne gaining experience with wider range of clients and general disorders. Subsequently, I moved to South Tipperary where I became part of the team to establish ‘Clonmel Counselling Centre’ and currently practises there in a private capacity. While Gestalt therapy is my main therapeutic practice I also employ C.B.T. techniques, developed while training in MBCT at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University, Wales. During my practice as a psychotherapist I became aware of patterns of stress in individual people’s lives and became interested in the beneficial effects of meditation on mental and physical health. This interest is rooted in my own practice & meditation background which has contributed to an increased capacity to being ‘present’ in the ‘now’ with clients. I also teach mindfulness courses and workshops in Clonmel, Cahir and Athlone.

I graduated from the IGC in 2001. I found the training very supportive and enriching. There was an atmosphere of acceptance and respect for each one which really encouraged us as trainees to blossom and develop to our full potential of what we were capable at the time. I also trained for three years with Vincent Humphries in the Dublin Gestalt Institute. Since then I worked for ten years on the training team of the M.Sc in Psychotherapy run by Turning Point, Dun Laoghaire and left that to pursue training with Ruella Frank, Gestalt and Somatic Development trainer based in New York. I have just completed training in Clinical Supervision with the Dublin Gestalt Centre and am about to start a two year training in the Italian Gestalt School on the Gestalt Approach to Modern Disturbances. I have found the Gestalt Approach to everything so wholesome and feel that sense of living in the present and exploring the field in a relational way so nourishing. It is how I work and how I try to live my life.
